Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — 목화토금수. Every one of the eight characters in your chart carries one of them, so the elements are how a chart is summarised.
They are not five separate ingredients. They are a system of movement, described by two cycles.
The generating cycle (상생) — each element produces the next: Wood feeds Fire · Fire makes Earth (ash) · Earth yields Metal · Metal carries Water · Water grows Wood.
The controlling cycle (상극) — each element restrains another: Wood breaks Earth · Earth dams Water · Water quenches Fire · Fire melts Metal · Metal cuts Wood.
Both cycles are neutral. Being controlled is not bad and producing is not always good — an element that produces without limit exhausts itself.
What a distribution means
A free Saju chart usually shows a count like Wood 1, Fire 0, Earth 3, Metal 2, Water 2. Two things are worth reading in it.
What is missing. An element absent from the chart is not a defect. It usually describes something you seek externally rather than generate internally. A chart with no Fire often belongs to someone who gravitates toward warmth and visibility in others.
What is heavy. An element appearing three or four times dominates the chart's behaviour. Heavy Earth tends to read as stability that shades into immovability. Heavy Water tends to read as adaptability that shades into difficulty settling.
The counts alone are a summary, not a reading. Where an element sits matters as much as how often it appears, and its relationship to your Day Master is what turns a count into a statement.
