If you read one thing about Korean Saju, make it this. The Day Master is the character everything else in your chart is measured against, and almost nothing in a reading makes sense without it.
Where it comes from
Your chart has four pillars — year, month, day, hour. Each pillar has two characters: a heavenly stem (천간) above and an earthly branch (지지) below. Eight characters total.
Your Day Master (일간, sometimes written 일주 when referring to the whole day pillar) is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. Not the year. Not the animal most people know from the Chinese zodiac — that is the branch of the year pillar, one character out of eight.
There are ten possible Day Masters, because there are ten heavenly stems: the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form.

The yang and yin forms of the same element are genuinely different, not stronger and weaker versions of one thing. Yang Water (壬) is the ocean and the river: wide, changeable, always moving. Yin Water (癸) is the rain and the spring: quiet, penetrating, arriving without announcing itself. Both are Water. They behave nothing alike.
Why it is the reference point
A Saju chart is not a list of traits. It is a set of relationships, and the Day Master is what they are relationships to.
Take any other character in your chart and ask how it stands to your Day Master. Does it produce your element, or does your element produce it? Does it control yours, or does yours control it? Is it the same element, same polarity — or same element, opposite polarity?
Those questions have formal answers, and Korean Saju names them: the Ten Gods (십성). They are what turn eight abstract characters into statements about support, drive, expression, restraint, and attraction.
This is also why two people with the same Day Master can read very differently. The Day Master sets the frame. What fills it is the other seven characters.
What it is not
It is not a personality type. A Day Master does not predict behaviour on its own, any more than knowing someone is left-handed tells you how they argue.
It is not fate. Saju describes structure and season, not outcome.
And it is not the whole chart. A reading that only tells you your Day Master has told you the reference point and skipped the reading.
Finding yours
Your Day Master comes from the calendar day you were born, converted through the sixty-step cycle. For almost every birth it is fixed once the date and timezone are known, without the hour.
The exception is the hour either side of midnight. The Saju day begins at 23:00 rather than at civil midnight, so a birth between 23:00 and 23:59 belongs to the next day's pillar — and therefore to a different Day Master than the calendar date alone would suggest. If you were born in that window, the time is not optional. Birth time, and why it matters goes into it.
The birth hour matters for the rest of the chart too, and it matters a lot. But if you do not know it, a three-pillar reading is still possible. It simply leaves the hour pillar out rather than guessing at it.
